Gannett / Rochester Newspapers • 1987–2007
For two decades, Maria Friske worked as an illustrator for Gannett’s Rochester newspapers, creating original editorial artwork to accompany news, features, commentary, and special publications.
Working in a daily newspaper environment meant translating ideas into images—often on tight deadlines. The assignment might begin with a story, a headline, or an abstract concept. The challenge was to find the visual idea that could communicate it quickly, intelligently, and memorably.
The work spans a wide range of subjects and approaches, combining conceptual thinking, drawing, design, humor, symbolism, and visual storytelling.
Long before “ideation” became part of my teaching vocabulary, it was simply part of the job: read, think, make connections, find the idea, and make it visual.

It taught me to look beyond the obvious solution—to use metaphor, juxtaposition, exaggeration, humor, and unexpected connections to communicate an idea.
That way of thinking continues to inform both my design practice and the way I teach creative ideation today.
